Biochar in Your Compost Bin
Add biochar directly to the compost pile. The compost finishes charged, the biochar inherits the compost's nutrient and microbial profile.

Why this works
Compost piles run through every charging mechanism biochar benefits from — moisture, nitrogen load, diverse microbial populations. A biochar that finishes inside a compost pile arrives in your garden already charged, already wet, already saturated with beneficial biology.
It is also the easiest way to use biochar in practice: no separate charging process, no extra buckets, no soak stations. You put it in the pile during a build or a turn and you ignore it.
How much
- 5–10 % of pile volume, spread through the build.
- Don’t dump it all in one layer. Thin ribbons of biochar between greens and browns; every turn folds them through the matrix.
Rate by pile size
| Pile volume | Biochar addition | Bags |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 m³ (small tumbler) | ~3–6 kg | two to four 6.5 L bags |
| 0.5 m³ (typical back-yard bin) | ~6–12 kg | four to eight 6.5 L bags |
| 1 m³+ (hot pile) | 12–25 kg | eight or more — see wholesale for contractor volumes |
What to expect from the pile
- Reduced ammonia odour during high-nitrogen stages (the biochar’s surface area retains ammonia compounds)
- Faster finishing — piles with biochar tend to run hotter longer
- A finished compost that is noticeably darker and drier to the feel
Apply to your garden as compost
The finished compost/biochar blend goes onto beds as normal. You have charged the biochar as part of the composting, so you can apply immediately.
