Biochar across the GTA
Premium hardwood biochar shipped from Guelph to Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville, Burlington, and the rest of the 905. Built for the soil the GTA was built on.
The 905 sits on glacial till
Most of the western GTA — Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Burlington — is Halton till: a brown clay loam with a hardpan a foot or two down. North through Vaughan and Richmond Hill, the till gets stonier. Markham and Pickering soils carry more silt. The thread that connects them is poor drainage and seasonal compaction. New subdivisions are worse: the topsoil that came back after construction is usually four inches of screened fill over compacted subsoil.
Biochar is the cheapest structural fix. Worked into the top 20 cm at 10–20 % by volume, the carbon scaffolding holds open air channels that clay alone collapses. It doesn't replace compost — it lasts longer than compost and works alongside it. Read the clay soil guide for rates.
How GTA gardeners use biochar
- Mississauga and Brampton new-build yards. Compacted subsoil under thin sod. Strip the sod, fork biochar and compost into the top 15 cm before laying new turf or planting beds.
- Oakville and Burlington raised-bed gardens. Mature gardens with depleted organic matter — a spring biochar amendment plus compost rebuilds tilth in one season.
- Vaughan and Markham trees and shrubs. Top-dress around the drip line in fall. The biochar settles in over winter and supports root function the following spring.
Delivery across the GTA
Most GTA orders go via Trexity — same-day or next-day from Guelph, no signature required, dropped at the door. Outside the Trexity zone (some 905 outer pockets) we use Chit Chats or Stallion Express, which run 2–4 business days. Shipping is free across Canada, included in the $34.99 price. See delivery times by region.
Nine bags clears the free-shipping threshold — enough to amend a 4×4 raised bed with some to spare.

The use-case guides carry rate tables by bed size and soil type, so you can match bags to your plot before ordering. Browse the shop if you already know what you need.
