Wellington loam — the soil that built the OAC
Guelph and much of neighbouring Wellington County sit on Guelph loam: a well-drained, dark-brown loam over calcareous glacial till, classified Brunisolic Gray Brown Luvisol. It's the soil that drew the Ontario Agricultural College here in 1874 and the soil that still feeds the city's market gardens in Eramosa and Puslinch.
Loam is the easy starting point. It already drains, already holds nutrients, already has decent structure. Biochar's job here isn't crisis intervention — it's longevity. A 10–15 % by-volume amendment locks stable carbon into the soil profile for decades and gives microbial life a permanent home that compost alone, which decomposes within a few years, can't provide.
Three Guelph use cases
- Established city gardens (the Ward, St. George's, Old University). Mature beds, depleted carbon. A 10 % biochar amendment plus compost rebuilds the carbon stock that decades of vegetable production drew down.
- Market-garden plots in Eramosa and Puslinch. Working soil that turns over fast. Biochar at 10–15 % into the rooting zone improves water-holding capacity through the August dry stretch and slows nutrient leaching from applied feeds.
- Tree planting on new builds. The compacted backfill around the foundation is the worst soil on the property. Mix biochar into the planting hole and the surrounding fill — root establishment is measurably faster.

Where to start
Wellington loam already drains and holds water reasonably well, so it takes the default rate — no over-applying for a soil that doesn't need it. Browse the shop for retail bags or read the about page for the longer story.
Local soil. Local product. Next town over.
If you garden in Guelph and you've never used biochar, start with one 6.5 L bag, amend a bed section, and watch it through a season. Loam responds slowly and steadily.
