Biochar in Hamilton

Premium Canadian hardwood biochar, from Guelph and delivered across Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, and the orchard belt below the Niagara Escarpment.

Hamilton sits on clay over limestone

The lower city — east-end Hamilton, the central neighbourhoods, and Stoney Creek — sits on Chinguacousy and Oneida clay loam: heavy, alkaline, and shallow over the dolostone bedrock that surfaces along the escarpment. Up the Mountain in Ancaster and Dundas, the till is stonier but still clay-dominant. Below the brow, the orchard belt running toward Grimsby has deeper, fruit-friendly silt loams — the soil that built the Niagara peninsula's tender-fruit industry.

Hamilton's clay-over-limestone soils run alkaline (often pH 7.5+), so pH is worth paying attention to here. Hardwood biochar is alkaline as well — our supplier specifies a pH range of 7–10 for this material, and pH is scheduled for our next lab submission, so we publish no measured figure of our own yet. If your beds already test above 7.5, account for that before you amend. The clay soil guide covers application rates.

Three Hamilton use cases

Delivery to Hamilton

Hamilton is on the western edge of the Trexity zone — most lower-city and Stoney Creek orders qualify for same- or next-day from Guelph. Outside that zone we use Chit Chats or Stallion Express for 2–3 business day delivery. Shipping is free across Canada, included in the $34.99 price. See delivery times by region.

Hamilton is roughly an hour from our packing facility, so transit damage is rare and turnaround is short.

Plan your application

The clay soil guide has the rate table, and clay takes the top of the 10–20 % range. A single bed section runs four or five bags; a full bed is a bigger order worth discussing as wholesale. Browse the shop if you already know what you need.

Next step

Heavy clay, alkaline, shallow over rock — biochar handles all three.

Start with the clay soil guide if you want a precise rate, or grab a few bags if you've got a bed to amend this weekend.
