Biochar in Ottawa

Premium Canadian hardwood biochar, from Guelph and shipped across the National Capital Region. Built for Ottawa's split personality — sensitive marine clay one block, sandy river deposit the next.

Ottawa soil: clay and sand, often on the same street

The Ottawa Valley is a former seabed. Much of the city — Orleans, Barrhaven, parts of Nepean — sits on Leda clay (also called Champlain Sea clay), a fine, water-sensitive marine deposit that swells when wet and cracks when it dries. Closer to the Ottawa and Rideau rivers, and through neighbourhoods like Westboro and the Glebe, the soil shifts to sandy loam over older alluvial deposits.

Same product, two different jobs. In the clay zones, biochar opens drainage and resists the seasonal heave that snaps perennial roots — see the clay soil guide. On sandy ground it does the opposite: it holds onto water and nutrients the sand drains away in a day. Mix at 10–20 % by volume into the working zone in either case.

Delivery to Ottawa

Trexity doesn't run to Ottawa, so Capital Region orders ship via Chit Chats or Stallion Express. Both run on the Canada Post / DHL network for last-mile, and transit from Guelph is typically 3–5 business days. Shipping is free across Canada, included in the $34.99 price. See delivery times by region.

Bags ship sealed in foil-lined pouches — biochar is hygroscopic and untreated kraft would arrive damp on a 3–5 day run.

Plan your order

The raised-beds guide has the rate table for clay and sand alike. A 2 × 4 ft bed section runs about four bags, and shipping is free wherever we deliver. Browse the shop if you already know what you want.

Next step

Clay or sand — same fix, different reason.

If you can't tell which one your yard is, the clay and sandy soil guides each carry their own rate — clay takes the top of the range, sand the middle.
