Biochar in Toronto
Premium Canadian hardwood biochar, from Guelph and shipped across the GTA. Built for the soil you actually have — not the bag of "garden mix" the box store sells.
Toronto soil: the clay corridor
Most Toronto yards sit on the old Lake Iroquois plain — a band of silty clay and clay loam that runs from Etobicoke through East York to Scarborough. It holds water, compacts under foot traffic, and bakes hard in July. South of Davenport Road the clay thickens; north of it, the Don and Humber valleys mix in sand and till. Either way, the same problem shows up: drainage. Beds flood after a rain, then crust over a week later.
Biochar opens that structure up. Mixed at 10–20 % by volume, the carbon scaffolding stays in the soil for years, holding water without holding it hostage. Heavy clay is the use case it was made for — see the clay soil guide for application rates and the bags a given bed takes.
Three ways Toronto gardeners use it
- Condo balcony containers. A 6.5 L bag amends roughly three to four 12-inch pots, or a dozen small ones. Charged biochar holds moisture between watering, which matters on a windy 30th-floor balcony.
- Backyard raised beds. A new 4×8 cedar bed needs about 90 L worked into the top 20 cm — fourteen bags, or a conversation about wholesale. Most people start with one bed section and work outward.
- Boulevard and front-yard renovations. Toronto's compacted parking-strip soil benefits from a fall amendment — fork in biochar with leaf compost before the freeze, let the worms work it through winter.
Delivery to Toronto
Orders to Toronto and the inner GTA usually go out via Trexity for same- or next-day delivery from Guelph. Outside the Trexity zone we use Chit Chats or Stallion Express, with 2–4 business day transit anywhere in the city. Shipping is free across Canada, included in the $34.99 price. See delivery times by region. We pack to the carrier — no Canada Post counter rates.
Bags ship sealed in foil-lined pouches, which matters: biochar is hygroscopic, and untreated kraft would arrive damp.
Start small, then scale
If you've never used biochar, one 6.5 L bag is enough to amend a couple of containers and see what it does in your soil before committing a whole bed. Browse the shop or check the containers guide to size your first order.
